Derek Redmond hosted a spectacular evening, at the Mechanics on the 4th July, to celebrate the sporting achievements of volunteers in the town. The Tornados had representation in two of the ten categories.
First up was Cameron Stewart who was shortlisted for Young Volunteer of the Year. A short video was played of Cameron in action at training and a voice over explaining how he is passionate about teaching the younger players the elements of flag football. Also within this category was a young girl from Burnley Wood Youth and Community Group and a young basketball player who runs a club very similar to Cameron, the later being the winner but Cameron received a certificate “Highly Commending” his volunteering.
The next category was the adult Volunteer of the Year, where both David Robins and Paul Brammer had been shortlisted. Within their group was a lady who founded Park Run in Burnley and a young man who organised the Getin2 Holiday Club. Again a video was shown of David and Paul teaching the kitted players how to tackle and showing how fun the sport can be, however, again they were not the overall winner but did receive a certificate for “highly commended”.
The evening was a success with many of the Tornados staff there to support the coaches who had been nominated and everyone enjoyed the hot beef sandwiches and ice cream.
The Tornados look forward to 2014 when they can hopefully, not only be nominated and shortlisted for the various awards but be worthy winners.
