With refs in place the captains met and the games were underway. The Tornado team captains for the day were Anthony Tither, Ben Dyer and Johnathan Robertshaw.
The 10 man Tornado team could not stop the 20 strong Warrior team in the first half and our offense couldn’t score any points either. At the half the Tornados trailed 22-0. However after a positive half time talk the team rallied and were able to score with Sam Zak scoring all of the Tornados 14 points. In the end the Warriors proved too strong for the Tornados and ran out 30-14 winners.
After the short break the Tornados faced another large team in term of numbers, Manchester Titans, however they were all rookies. Tornados QB Johhny steadied his nerves in this game and threw 3 touchdowns in the first half, with rookie Dom Ward scoring his first TD for the team. The second half showed the dominance of the Tornados with a shut out and interceptions for Sam Zak and Ellis Crump. The final score was 46-6 to the Tornados.
The third game of the day for the Tornados would be against a team of 16 and 17 year olds, out for revenge following our 68-8 beating of their junior team in the previous week. The Tornados were running out of steam and Zack Leigh did very well to keep his cool under pressure from the opposition, whose player was eventually ejected from the game due to unsportsmanlike conduct. Ben Dyer and Josh Bonnick held firm on defense but the team struggled to stop the Panthers. Dom Ward was able to score in the first half with a running play but at the half the team were down 33-6. It would be a big ask for the remaining Tornado players to pull out a win, especially following the loss of Johhny Gunson to injury. Back in the second half the defense held strong with Baylee Deevers making some good tackles and the Tornados limited the panthers to only scoring 6 points, Ellis Crump stopping the two point conversion with an interception. Dom Ward and Sam Zack got the only points of the game for the Tornados who eventually lost 39-14.
The Manchester Titans general manager posted on facebook “Just wanted a say a big thank you to everybody at Burnley Tornados for a great day of football. They made us feel very welcome and even the sun came out”. The Tornados Youth Head Coach, Paul Brammer said “We knew this year would be tough for us with having such a small squad, which is fairly new but very talented. We learned a lot from this tournament and as coaches we know where the work is needed and I know our squad will learn fast.”
The youth MVPs for this tournament were Ben Dyer, Josh Bonnick and Sam Zak.
